Growing Opposition To The Emissions Farming Tax

Bryce, Laurie, Mel, and the team at Groundswell NZ

Have you seen the latest Farmers Weekly?

In a full-page open letter, a group of sheep and beef farmers are calling out the failure of the recommendations that the He Waka Eke Noa emissions process has made to the Government.

As Groundswell NZ has been pointing out, those recommendations would be a tax on farming that ignores the actual warming effect of agricultural emissions, which is likely close to neutral already.

The open letter also calls on industry leaders to reject HWEN and support the development of a new scheme “based on the principles of warming, equity, environmental sustainability and on farm viability – under a practical, low-cost alternative.”

Finally, the letter states that, should Beef + Lamb fail to reject HWEN, farmers will be left with no choice but to consider a Special Meeting and, as a last resort, a Vote of No Confidence under the Beef + Lamb constitution to hold industry representatives to account.

More and more, the farmers and the wider sector are seeing the unworkable approach to emissions that the Government and our industry leaders have been set on, as well as the shortcomings in the agricultural advocacy bodies.

Your support enables Groundswell NZ to keep pushing the message out – it’s working.
